QUEENSLANDERS NEVER SAY DIE
For Queenslanders, State of Origin is more than just a sporting event, it is a bona fide phenomenon that captures the hearts and minds of fans from the Cape down to Coolangatta. And in 2020, victory in the Ampol State of Origin series tasted even sweeter, with a previously unheralded Maroons side under the guidance of master coach Wayne Bennett securing an incredible series win over their vaunted New South Wales opponents. With a young, inexperienced squad that drew comparisons to Queensland s legendary 1995 and 2001 Origin teams, the Maroons went into an historic Game 1 opener at the Adelaide Oval as underdogs. But despite the Blues running out to an early lead, a classic second half Queensland fightback led by skipper Daly Cherry-Evans and halves partner Cameron Munster saw the Maroons prevail 18-14 in a tense affair. A Game 2 ambush from a clinical Blues outfit in Sydney witnessed a reversal, with New South Wales running out 34-10 winners. That set up a mouth-watering Game 3 decider at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, where in front of a parochial packed house, the Maroons inspired by the playmaking of Wally Lewis Medallist Cameron Munster and brilliant debutant Harry Grant again showed their famous fighting spirit, proving too good for the Blues in a thrilling 20-14 win, and wresting the coveted Origin shield from their southern neighbours for the first time since 2017. Sit back and enjoy the 2020 Ampol State of Origin series will all three games presented in full.
